Rep. Murphy: I Won't Support U.S. Air Strikes in Syria

Statement

Date: Sept. 10, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

In advance of the President's address to the nation this evening, Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18) today issued the following statement regarding a proposed US military air strike against Syria:

"Having attended numerous briefings, analyzed classified and open-source information, and discussed this issue at length with Administration officials and my constituents, I have concluded a US military air strike on Syria is not in our immediate national security interest and I therefore will not support the President's plan.

"In fact, President Obama has not presented a rational plan, not developed an overall coherent Middle East strategy, and has failed to define the objectives of a US military strike.

"The Administration is pursuing a meandering, amorphous strategy without a clear goal or end game. This go-it-alone strategy, which has seemingly changed by the day and now by the hour, has convinced me we should not authorize use of force as it is guaranteed to end in failure.

"With his ever-changing public statements, the President has proven the adage of the Cheshire Cat of "Alice in Wonderland' fame: "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.'"
