Grayson Statement on Proposal to Place Syrian Chemical Weapons under International Control

Statement

Date: Sept. 9, 2013
Issues: Defense

The international community is proposing that Syria relinquish control of its chemical weapons to international monitors in an effort to preclude a future chemical attack. British Prime Minister David Cameron said that such a proposal would be a "huge step forward." Syria's foreign minister stated that his country "welcomes" the proposal, according to the Associated Press.

Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) voiced his support for such a proposal this morning, saying, "The proposal to place Syria's chemical weapons under international control has a great deal of merit, and unlike the planned strikes, actually would prevent chemical warfare attacks in the future. Placing Syrian chemical weapons under international control would be constructive. U.S. military intervention in the Syrian civil war would be destructive."
