Gardner Comments on Passage of Subsidies Verification Bill

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Cory Gardner (CO-4) made the following statement today following passage of H.R. 2775, the No Subsidies Without Verification Act:

"Since the President's healthcare bill became law, the Administration has shown no hesitation to change the law as it sees fit, without any authorization from Congress. Whether it is the vast number of waivers that have been issued, the delay of the employer mandate for a year, or the decision not to implement the Class Act, there have been too many instances of unilateral decision making without any consultation of the legislative branch.

"Buried in over 600 pages of regulations released in July was one of the most disturbing delays to date. The Department of Health and Human Services said that until 2015, those who purchase health insurance from the exchanges and apply for subsidies would not be required to provide income verification, and all applications would be accepted as truth. This is deeply troubling given the potential for fraud and abuse of such subsidies. In fact, the Wall Street Journal has reported that without income verification, the potential for abuse could run as high as 250 billion dollars in the law's first decade.

"My "yes' vote for H.R. 2775, the No Subsidies Without Verification Act, was an easy one. Until this law can be repealed and replaced in its entirety, I am committed to doing everything I can to make sure that it does as little damage as possible."
