NELSON PRAISIES UN LIFTING OF IRAQ SANCTIONS

WASHINGTON, DC - The United Nations Security Council today unanimously approved a resolution lifting economic sanctions on Iraq. The move, sponsored by the United States, will dismantle the oil-for-food program in six months and lifts all sanction except those on weapons. It also formally gave the United States and Great Britain authority to control the country until an elected government is in place.

Nebraska's Senator Ben Nelson issued the following statement on the resolution:

"This is a welcome development for the people of Iraq and should hasten the rebuilding of that nation. Now goods will be able to flow freely into the country providing for faster distribution of humanitarian assistance and the growth of local economies. This is one more step toward ending the legacy of the corruption under the Saddam Hussein regime.

"I am also pleased to see the UN formally recognize the role of the United States and Britain in overseeing Iraq. This will strengthen our ability to help stabilize and rebuild the nation and will protect the interests of the Iraqi people under the auspices of international law."
