Hoyer Statement on Recognition of Same-Sex Marriages for Federal Tax Purposes

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Treasury Department announced that legally married same-sex couples will be recognized for federal tax purposes:

"Federal recognition for all legally married same-sex couples for the purposes of tax filing has been long overdue. Following the Supreme Court's decision striking down part of the discriminatory DOMA law, I am glad that the Obama Administration is moving quickly to ensure that federal policy complies with the spirit of the Court's ruling to provide equal recognition to all legally married couples. This important step is a victory for LGBT equality and will help more families receive the equal treatment they deserve."
