Perlmutter Opposed Attempts To Eliminate Education Standards And Programs

Press Release

Date: July 22, 2013
Issues: K-12 Education

Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) opposed a bill (H.R. 5) forced through by House Republicans gutting essential investments in America's schools, students and future generations. The "Letting Students Down Act" undermines education funding by over $1 billion next year, eliminates and weakens protections for hard working teachers, eliminates accountability and graduation standards, eliminates support for afterschool programs, and shifts valuable taxpayer dollars to private schools away from public schools.

Perlmutter said, "House Republicans continue putting up road blocks to our country's economic recovery and progress instead of allowing us to vote on bills to boost jobs and pass common-sense budget solutions. Today, they left all children behind and passed a bill undermining the foundation of our education system."

Perlmutter voted to support an alternative measure to strengthen education for our students by establishing, among other things, more safety and security standards in our schools, ensures student achievement in the classroom, and protects students with disabilities. Unfortunately House Republicans defeated this provision.
