Head Start Cuts Hurt Children, Weaken Our Future

Statement

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) released the following statement in response to the announcement from the Office of Head Start that approximately 57,000 children were going to be cut from its programs due to sequestration this year -- including 3,847 children in New York, making New York the third hardest hit state in the country:

With Head Start's latest announcement, we are now seeing that thousands of New York's children, and nearly 60,000 children nationwide, are going to suffer because of the self-made disaster that is sequestration. These catastrophic reductions are foreclosing access to the American dream and jeopardizing these children's futures by denying them critical early education. Even those children who will be able to continue in Head Start will be faced with fewer days in the classroom and sharp decreases in staffing.

Every day, we learn more about the devastating impact of sequestration and how it continues to weaken America and our future. I've long been opposed to sequestration and will continue to fight for its end. Our children deserve better.
