Governor Hassan Proclaims August 28 "Let Freedom Ring Day" to Mark 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" Speech

Location: Concord, NH

To honor the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Governor Maggie Hassan has proclaimed Wednesday, August 28, 2013, as "Let Freedom Ring Day" in New Hampshire. The Governor is encouraging bells to be rung across the state at 3:00 p.m. that day as part of a nation-wide effort to mark a half-century to the minute after Dr. King delivered his historic address.

"Dr. King's historic speech and his powerful message of equality, inclusion and peace have inspired generations of Americans and people across the globe to come together to advance the march of progress," Governor Hassan said. "Throughout our history, each time we have brought more people in from the margins, into the heart and soul of our society, we have grown stronger. Our recommitment to Dr. King's ideals and enduring legacy will ensure continued progress for the people of New Hampshire, America and the entire world for generations to come."

Governor Hassan will mark the occasion in New Hampshire by joining representatives of the Let Freedom Ring Coalition for a bell-ringing ceremony on the 28th on the State House lawn by the replica of the Liberty Bell.

The nationwide "Let Freedom Ring" bell-ringing events are being organized by The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change ("The King Center") and the organization's 50th Anniversary Coalition. For more information, visit
