In her latest act of support for slain teenager Trayvon Martin, Calif. Rep. Karen Bass changed both her Twitter and Facebook avatars to the heavily circulated picture of Martin as a child.

"We cannot be silent when a teenager is needlessly profiled, harassed & gunned down by those who choose to take law into their own hands," the Democrat tweeted on Sunday.

"We must keep working tirelessly to end racial profiling & ensure that the application of the law is equitable, just & fair for everyone," she added.

Bass's 37th district has been the site of some of the more violent protests following George Zimmerman's acquittal. She pleaded with Leimert residents on Tuesday to protest peacefully and "stay calm."

"Destroying our community won't bring #TrayvonMartin back. Let's organize for change," she said, adding that "There's a lot of police out right now & we don't need to have our kids swept up."

The Democrat held a telephone town hall conference Tuesday night in regards to the protesting in Los Angeles, urging "change without violence."

"This is Los Angeles, a place of diversity and acceptance. We are better than what ensued last night," Ms. Bass retweeted from a follower, Erin Brewster.
