Hoyer Statement on Justice Department's Lawsuit Challenging Texas Voter ID Law

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Justice Department's decision to file a new lawsuit against the state of Texas over the state's voter identification law:

"Every eligible voter in this country deserves the chance to cast a ballot and have that vote counted accurately. That is why I strongly support Attorney General Holder's decision today to challenge a Texas law that will place burdensome restrictions on eligible voters seeking to exercise their fundamental right to vote. Voter identification laws like the one that passed in Texas serve effectively to disenfranchise those who do not possess or cannot afford certain forms of state-issued identification, and they disproportionately impact seniors, students, and members of minority groups. House Democrats will continue to stand up for the right to vote. In the aftermath of the Supreme Court's June decision in Shelby vs. Holder, Congress must swiftly act in a bipartisan way to restore appropriate federal oversight of changes to state and local election laws."
