A delegation of House members, including Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan and Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, arrived in Israel today to study issues critical to the U.S.-Israel relationship and international security.

"Israel is one of the United States' greatest friends and allies and it is vital that we in the Congress completely appreciate the multitude of complicated issues threatening the safety of the region, as well as how it all affects us at home," Nolan said.

"A meaningful visit for me will be the day we drive to Israel's northern border with Syria, in light of my continual push to require a full Congressional vote before sending any military assistance to the Syrian rebel forces," Nolan added.

"After meeting with local residents and military officials, I hope to gain a more personal understanding of the ongoing conflict in Syria, its impact on the surrounding areas, and what measures the United States can take that do not involve military intervention."

The tour coincides with a new round of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, facilitated by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Nolan and fellow Democrats will meet with both Israeli and Palestinian government officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro. The tour will also include visits to historical and strategic sites, such as Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and the Gaza Strip.

Said Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, "This trip is an important opportunity for Members of Congress to meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, receive briefings from government and military officials, and gain a deeper understanding of American interests in a changing Middle East. Our visit will reaffirm the close relationship between the United States and Israel and reflect the strong support for Israel among those serving in Congress in its quest for security and peace."

The trip is sponsored by a charitable organization that works to expand public awareness about issues affecting the Middle East. No public money was used to finance this visit.
