Congresswoman Cheri Bustos Pledges To Continue To Protect & Preserve Medicare For Middle Class On 48th Anniversary

Statement

Date: July 30, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos released the following statement saluting the Medicare program, which was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson 48 years ago today:

"For the past forty-eight years, Medicare has provided millions of middle class seniors with quality and dependable health care in their golden years. Along with Social Security, Medicare is absolutely vital to the well-being of the seniors I represent in Illinois. They have worked hard their entire lives, played by the rules and deserve the peace and security of knowing Medicare will be there for them when they need it. But Medicare must also be strong for future generations of the middle class, and that is why I have adamantly opposed a plan advocated by those in Congress with the wrong priorities that would end Medicare as we know it by shifting more costs onto the backs of the working families who can least afford it. I'll continue to do my part to protect and preserve Medicare, so it will be strong for the middle class for the next forty-eight years and beyond."
