Congressman Andrews Announces $2.8M in Federal Grants for South Jersey Economic Development

Today, Congressman Andrews announced Camden County received nearly $3 million dollars in federal grants to fund economic development projects throughout our community. Awarded as part of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program run by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Congressman Andrews was an avid supporter of these funds as part of appropriations legislation that creates jobs by expanding business and infrastructure projects throughout our region.

Nearly $545,000 will be spent to improve roadways throughout Camden County. For instance, the Borough of Runnemede received a portion of the funds to reconstruct East 2nd Street from the Black Horse Pike to Central Avenue. Similarly, Brooklawn was awarded a grant to remove and replace its deteriorated concrete sidewalks.

In addition to the roadway projects, over $933,000 will be used to complete construction on households and bring them up to code for low income families and seniors, generating an increased demand for quality construction workers in our region. Also, $951,965 will be used to make much the needed improvements to public facilities and parks throughout South Jersey. For example, Haddonfield will use its grant to install an elevator at the borough library. Finally, $460,000 will be used to demolish dangerous structures and clean up neighborhoods in Camden.

"These grants are a shining example of how small investments can add up to large positive outcomes for our community here in South Jersey," said Congressman Andrews. "By investing a little bit in infrastructure jobs now we can improve the economic outlook for businesses and create more permanent jobs in the future."
