Shea-Porter Cosponsors Bipartisan Reforms to Cut Waste and Fraud From Medicare, Medicaid

Press Release

This week, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter cosponsored the PRIME Act, bipartisan legislation that would eliminate billions of dollars in waste, fraud, and abuse from Medicare and Medicaid.

"Cracking down on waste, fraud, and abuse is a common-sense move, and the PRIME Act is a middle-ground solution to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent on care, not waste." Shea-Porter said. "This bill proves that Republicans and Democrats can work together in a way that's good for New Hampshire families, and I hope to see more cooperation like this going forward."

The PRIME Act, which has bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, reforms the two programs by imposing tougher penalties for Medicare and Medicaid fraud, and reducing improper payments under the programs. It would also prevent people from stealing the identities of deceased doctors to claim reimbursements from the government.

"Americans who pay into Medicare and Medicaid deserve responsible stewardship of their money," Shea-Porter added. "It is my job to help root out inefficiencies and waste in these programs so we can preserve them for future generations. We can all share this role by contacting www.stopmedicarefraud.gov or calling 1-800-447-8477 to report Medicare fraud."

Congresswoman Shea-Porter is a strong supporter of ensuring the long-term viability of Medicare. 231,444 New Hampshire residents benefit from Medicare and around 171,000 benefit from Medicaid. In addition to the PRIME Act, she helped extend the solvency of the Medicare Trust Fund by eliminating unwarranted subsidies to private insurance companies administering Medicare Advantage.
