REP. ISSA STATEMENT ON ASSASSINATION OF FORMER PRIME MINISTER RAFIK HARIRI

Washington, DC - Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA), a Lebanese-American, who has met with former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on several occasions (May 30, 2003 most recently), today released the following statement:

The assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was a heinous act of terrorism and a direct assault on democracy in Lebanon. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with his family and the families of the other victims of today's attack.

Prime Minister Hariri returned to his home country to help rebuild a nation that had been torn apart by civil war. As an American with family still in Lebanon, I am saddened that a man who sought peace, reconciliation, and a Lebanon free of foreign influence has fallen.

Despite this attack on democracy, I call on all parties to restore a peaceful, prosperous, independent, and democratic Lebanon. The international community must play a central role in ensuring that those responsible for this assassination be brought to justice.
