Governor Issues Statement on Tort Reform Victories - Transcript
"If you look at the changes we're pushing for as an administration - whether that's income tax relief, bringing market-based reforms to our education system or the tort reform proposals we've laid out - they're all about competitiveness," Gov. Sanford said. "We simply have to become more competitive as a state if we're going to be successful in creating jobs, bringing capital investment and raising income levels here in South Carolina. I'd particularly commend the Senate for passing roughly the same medical malpractice bill that Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue signed into law this week. Change is never easy in the political process, but the Senate deserves a tremendous amount of credit for - among other things - keeping its eye on what was happening across the river and ultimately doing something about it. This is absolutely vital legislation given that our unemployment rate is currently 50% higher than Georgia's, and I'd urge the House to get it to my desk as quickly as possible. I'd also credit the House for getting the ball rolling on the business side of tort reform, and I'm looking forward to working with the Senate on enhancing that bill so that it further expands our state's competitive advantage."
