Scott Statement on Passage of H.R. 5, the "Letting Students Down Act"

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement on his 'No' vote on H.R. 5, the so-called "Student Success Act," legislation to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA):

"Our education system is in need of reform, but H.R. 5 is not the solution. H.R. 5 would scrap key provisions of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) that hold schools, districts, and states accountable for providing a quality education to all students. The legislation passed today also does nothing to close the achievement gap that affects so many of our students, or to reduce the school dropout rate.

"It is my hope that Congress will work to build on and improve NCLB, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the future to expand educational opportunities for all students."
