Governor Corbett: Keystone Communities Grant to Provide Housing Modifications for Individuals with Disabilities

The Corbett administration today awarded a $250,000 Keystone Communities Accessible Housing grant that will help Allegheny County residents living with permanent physical disabilities to make modifications to their homes.

"Helping our citizens with physical disabilities remain in their homes is an effort my administration will continue to support through this program," Corbett said. "This grant will help provide modifications to residences to prevent accidents, facilitate caregiving, and make it easier to carry out everyday tasks."

The Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County (RAAC) will receive the grant for the home modification program, expected to assist an estimated 50 households.

RAAC has been the recipient of five access grants and additional small grants totaling more than $2,325,000. The county has provided another $1,275,000 in matching funds, helping 375 households to make modifications and necessary health and safety improvements.

The grant will be administered through ACTION-Housing, Inc., a private non-profit, which has operated and acted as the administrative agent for the program since 2001.

This agency will be responsible for the implementation of the program, as well as compliance with all state and local funding requirements and all appropriate state and local building codes. It will also certify incomes for each household served, as well as supervise required reporting and the conducting and independent audit of all expended funds.

The Keystone Communities Accessible Housing Program's goals are to expand individuals' living options, promote health and safety, and increase their ability to function effectively and more independently in their home.
