Today, Representative Tim Walz, a former high school social studies teacher, released the following statement after voting against the partisan, underfunded, and unaccountable reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, commonly referred to as No Child Left Behind.
"Our students deserve a high-quality education that promotes opportunity and prosperity. Unfortunately this bill, like so many others we've seen this Congress, is another partisan step backward and is bad for teachers, students, principals, and parents. Let's work together to pass a bipartisan proposal that moves our country forward; a proposal that invests in our schools and ensures that all students have access to a high-quality education that will make sure they are college and career ready."
The reauthorization of No Child Left Behind also faces wide-ranging criticism and opposition from teachers, principals, student advocacy, civil rights, and business groups because they know that every student deserves to be educated up to the highest standard, not subjected to the lowest.
