Congresswoman Beatty's Statement on the Trial of George Zimmerman

Statement

Date: July 15, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

"I was saddened by the decision of not guilty reached by members of a Seminole County Circuit Court jury, in Sanford, Fla. in the trial of George Zimmerman. Over the last few weeks, many of us have watched the State of Florida v. Zimmerman trial, in the hope for justice to prevail and for Trayvon's killer to not go unpunished.

In the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we continue to make our voices heard and stand up for justice when it involves the safety of our children, gun laws, the justice system, racial bias and racial profiling. But as importantly, I join a vast number of Americans who also believe that a national re-examination of "Stand Your Ground" laws needs to be conducted--with all deliberate speed. The actions protected by this law will surely lead to more needless deaths. I pray for the entire Trayvon Martin family."
