Scalise Modified Charleston Method Amendment Passes House

Date: July 10, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Scalise today successfully passed an amendment preventing the Army Corps from enforcing the Modified Charleston Method in Louisiana. The amendment passed unanimously.

"When the Corps forced the Modified Charleston Method (MCM) upon our state in 2011, they virtually shut down many beneficial development projects in Southeast Louisiana," Scalise said. "The MCM not only dramatically increases the costs of developing property for small businesses, it also drives up the cost of our local hurricane protection projects significantly, jeopardizing the safety of our families and communities. Appropriate wetlands mitigation and community protection in Southeast Louisiana should not be mutually exclusive, and I'm committed to working with our delegation to fix this radical and flawed mandate by the Corps that was based on a fundamentally different region of the country."
