Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Announces $2.1 Million to Assist Homeless Veterans

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) today announced $2,125,224 for two Hawai"i organizations that will provide assistance to 566 homeless and at-risk veteran households across the islands. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will release this funding as a part of its expanding Supportive Services for Veteran Families, which supports VA's efforts to prevent at-risk veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly re-house those who have recently fallen into homelessness.

"In every generation, courageous men and women have raised their hands, volunteering to selflessly serve our nation in times of peace and times of war," said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. "Their sacrifices must be honored; they are dishonored if when they return home, they and their families face the burden of homelessness. This $2.1 million for Hawai"i service providers will assist more than 500 homeless veterans across Hawai"i, and honor their commitment and service to our country."

With these VA funds, grantees will provide a range of services that promote housing stability and connecting veterans and their family members to VA services such as mental health care and others.

Hawai"i grantees for Fiscal Year 2013 include:

Catholic Charities Hawai"i: $1,108,224

- Catholic Charities Hawai"i will serve approximately 166 participant households on the island of Oahu, including Metropolitan Honolulu, Central Oahu, Leeward Coast, North Shore, Windward Coast, and the islands of Maui, Kaua"i, and Hawai"i.

United States Veterans Initiative: $1,017,000

- United States Veterans Initiative will serve approximately 400 participant households on the islands of Oahu, Maui, and Hawai"i.
