Cassidy Criticizes FEMA Flood Maps

Statement

Date: July 10, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. today released the following statement on FEMA issuing new preliminary flood insurance rate maps for Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes:

"FEMA just released new preliminary flood insurance rate maps for Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes. These preliminary maps were released prior to FEMA finalizing its Levee Analysis and Mapping Procedure (LAMP) process. This process is supposed to determine an accurate way to credit flood control features, including non-federal levees and pumping stations.

"These map updates underscore the need for the Senate to pass the Cassidy Amendment that blocks rate increases when FEMA updates flood insurance rate maps. While FEMA will be finalizing its LAMP process soon, it is imperative that maps are not updated until FEMA finds a way to accurately incorporate and credit flood protection features. I will continue to fight for a flood insurance program that is accessible, solvent and balanced in consumer affordability."
