Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement on the GOP's refusal to take bipartisan action to prevent student loan interest rates doubling from 3.4 to 6.8 percent last week:
"Washington Republicans have made it clear that they are not interested in keeping interest rates low for students and ensuring college is affordable for all families. In fact, their plan would make things worse for those who want to go to college and would try to balance the budget on the backs of students. Their attempt now to cast blame, instead of working with us to find a solution, is simply more of the same from a party that isn't interested in solving problems and getting things done. We must act now to address this problem -- failure to do so will not just make college more expensive, but will also undermine our middle class and America's future."
