Bonamici: House Leadership Should Allow Debate and Vote on Senate Passed Immigration Reform

Statement

Issues: Immigration

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Senate's passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

"The Senate's bipartisan immigration reform legislation demonstrates what can happen when both parties work together in good faith. This bill contains a number of commonsense proposals to put our immigration policy back on sound footing. A bipartisan coalition in the House stands ready to take up this complicated issue, but so far efforts have been stalled.

"House leadership should allow debate and a vote on the Senate bill soon. Although the bill is not perfect, the legislative process is one of negotiation and compromise.

"Over the past few months, I've talked with leaders from the business, labor, agriculture, and immigrant communities, as well as countless constituents concerned about our current immigration system. It's abundantly clear that we need comprehensive immigration reform. I will continue to make the case to my colleagues that our communities and our economy will benefit if we send a comprehensive, bipartisan bill to the President's desk this year."
