Congressman Joe Garcia (D-FL) today issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision on the Defense of Marriage Act:
"Today's ruling is a historic step forward for equality and justice. Edie Windsor represents the courage of the millions of Americans who have fought and struggled for equality." Garcia said. "I am proud to say that I joined many of my colleagues in Congress to sign an amicus brief against DOMA. But by no means does the fight for marriage equality end today. Today is just the tipping point. Today is the day we both celebrate and double down our efforts to make sure that all people are treated with dignity, respect and equality." Garcia continued. "As Americans this must be what we always strive for. Whether it is one's sexual orientation or how we treat the families of hard working immigrants, we can and must do better." Congressman Garcia serves as a Vice Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled by a decision of 5-4 that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional.
