Letter to Rep. Dave Camp - Ways and Means Democrats Call for Hearing with Treasury Inspector General

Ways and Means Democrats, in a letter today to Chairman Dave Camp, are urging that he ask Treasury Inspector General Russell George to return to the Committee to answer questions under oath about his IRS audit, which left out key information that has come to light this week. This week we learned for the first time that the so-called "Be On the Look Out" lists included the term "progressives" to screen tax-exemption applications and that there were liberal organizations among the 298 groups that the Inspector General reviewed and received heightened scrutiny.

The full letter is below.

The Honorable Dave Camp
Committee on Ways and Means
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Chairman Camp:

It is now evident that the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration's May 14, 2013 audit report titled "Inappropriate Criteria Were Used to Identify Tax-Exempt Applications for Review" is fundamentally flawed.

The audit fails to acknowledge that the term "progressives" was on many of the same screening lists that included the term "Tea Party."
The audit also fails to acknowledge that liberal groups were among the 298 applications reviewed.
We request that you immediately ask Mr. George to return to the Committee and answer questions under oath regarding all of these matters.

This requires our prompt attention so that we may get back on the course which we hope is our mutual goal: fixing the problems at the Internal Revenue Service and restoring the trust of the American people.
