DeLauro Statement on Supreme Court's Voting Rights Act Decision

Statement

Date: June 25, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the Supreme Court's decision ruling Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) is unconstitutional. The decision struck down the formula used to determine if covered state and local governments are in compliance with the VRA.

"The Court has completely assaulted the Voting Rights Actwith today's decision. Long waits at the polls last November and new voter suppression laws underscore the continuing need for us to honor the values contained in the Voting Rights Act and the Fifteenth Amendment's promise of voting equality. I sincerely hope Congress can defy expectations and strengthen the Voting Rights Act that protects the most fundamental right of our democracy."
