Congresswoman Nita Lowey's Statement on the Supreme Court's Ruling on the Voting Rights Act

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court issued its decision in Shelby County v. Holder that invalidates Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act:

"For decades, the Voting Rights Act has helped protect one of the most fundamental privileges of being an American citizen: the right to vote. It addresses critical challenges involving voter identification, redistricting, and early voting to prevent discrimination of minority voters in New York and across our country.

"The Supreme Court's ruling today weakening the Voting Rights Act hurts the cause of equality and the vitality of our democracy. It is a disappointing step backwards.

"Fortunately, Congress has the power and authority to strengthen the Civil Rights Act. This is what Republicans and Democrats did together in 2006, and we must come together to do so again."
