Brooks Holds Life Science Listening Session

Press Release

Date: June 24, 2013

Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN) held a Life Science Listening Session today at the headquarters of Software Engineering Professionals (SEP) in Carmel. The event was attended by more than 25 industry professionals representing pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, consulting groups and other entities. The Indiana Health Industry Forum and Indiana Medical Device Manufacturers Council sponsored the gathering.

"Indiana is a key player in this vital and growing industry," Brooks said. "Today's discussion allowed Hoosier Life Science leaders the opportunity to discuss important issues and share their valuable insights with me."

Many participants expressed concerns with the implementation of Obamacare, particularly the new Medical Device Tax and the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) set up to regulate Medicare procedures and reimbursements. The Congresswoman is a co-sponsor of legislation that repeals the Medical Device Tax.

"Like members of our Life Science community, I am extremely concerned with the negative impact of Obamacare on patients and employers," Brooks said. "The Medical Device Tax is an unfair tax on an industry that employs thousands of Hoosiers and makes life better for millions of Americans. The ability of IPAB to choose which types of care patients receive with little to no accountability or outside influence is highly concerning."
