Governor Jindal Signs Legislation to Protect Taxpayers, Help State Recoup Debt

Press Release

Location: Baton Rouge, LA

Today, Governor Bobby Jindal signed legislation into law that will protect taxpayers by helping agencies throughout state government collect outstanding debt. This bill is part of the Governor's 2013 Legislative Package.

HB 629--authored by Representatives Chris Broadwater and Ted James--establishes the office of debt recovery at the Department of Revenue for the collection of delinquent debts owed to certain governmental entities.

Governor Jindal said, "When taxpayers send their hard-earned money to Baton Rouge, they do so with the expectation that state government will use that money in a responsible and efficient manner. By creating the office of debt recovery and better collecting funds owed to the state, we can use taxpayer dollars more responsibly and ensure that we continue funding critical services like education and health care."

This legislation will strengthen and enhance the collection of debts owed to the state by centralizing debt collection through the creation of the Centralized Recovery Unit (CRU) within the Louisiana Department of Revenue. The CRU will work in concert with the state Attorney General's office.

These collection reforms are expected to generate savings for the state by as much as $158 million over the next five years.
