Labrador Votes for SAFE Act at Judiciary Committee Markup

Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-ID), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, voted for the SAFE Act at a Committee markup today. This legislation -- which would improve the interior enforcement of our nation's immigration laws and strengthen our national security -- is the first of several immigration bills the Committee is marking up as part of a step-by-step approach to reforming our nation's immigration laws. The bill was approved by the Committee and will be considered by the House.

"Our current immigration system is broken, and now is the time to fix it," said Rep. Labrador. "We have a unique opportunity here in Congress to reform our immigration laws in a way that makes our country stronger, safer, and more prosperous. We must work in a bipartisan way to do what's right for the American people. The bill we approved today avoids the mistakes of the 1986 immigration law by bolstering interior enforcement of our immigration laws, something that I believe is absolutely crucial to getting immigration reform the right way."

H.R. 2278, the Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement (SAFE) Act grants states and localities the authority to enforce federal immigration laws, makes it more difficult for foreign nationals who pose a national security risk to enter and remain in the U.S., improves visa security, protects American communities from dangerous criminal aliens, strengthens border security, and equips our immigration enforcement officers to better do their jobs.
