Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama announced his intention to nominate former Deputy Attorney General James Comey as the next Director of the FBI:
"President Obama's nomination of James Comey as our next FBI Director adds an experienced voice and a longtime public servant to his Administration. From his work as a prosecutor to his post as a U.S. Attorney to his term as Deputy Attorney General, Comey's extensive background in law enforcement will be essential to his success in taking the helm at the FBI.
"Upon his confirmation by the Senate, James Comey will lead the FBI in meeting its responsibilities to protect the civil liberties of every American, while preserving the security of our communities. We look forward to working together to meet that task and to uphold first duty as public officials: keeping the American people safe.
"James Comey has earned the confidence of the President and the trust of his colleagues. He follows in the footsteps of Director Robert Mueller, who brought a steady hand to the FBI during tumultuous times. Director Mueller served our country with honor and dignity, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors. We hope his good work will continue under the leadership of James Comey."
