Today, Conference Vice Chair Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) joined with the House leadership team to discuss the House plan to stop student loan rates from doubling on July 1, and called on the Senate to act.
Vice Chair Lynn Jenkins:
"As the mom of two college-age students and someone who represents a lot of outstanding universities and other higher education institutions in the Second District of Kansas from University of Kansas, to Washburn University, Pitt State, Baker, Benedictine, and so many outstanding organizations, I understand the challenges that these young people standing behind us and across the nation are facing today.
"A lot of students have graduated recently and the average debt they take with them is over $35,000. That's too high and I am always amazed that there are still 37 million Americans that are paying off some kind of student debt. When amassed, it is over a trillion dollars.
"That's why the House acted early to resolve this issue, to keep the rates from doubling July 1st . We call upon our friends in the Senate and this administration to help us and not make pawns of these young people behind us in this political debate.
"We have used the language that the President had signed off on and we have met them more than halfway. We just hope that they stop playing politics with these young people."
