Our First Job

The number one job of the federal government is to defend America. My duty as your Congressman is to ensure our troops are supplied with the tools necessary to achieve their mission. I also have a duty to you, the taxpayer, to use your hard earned dollars as efficiently and effectively as possible. With these principles in mind, today the House advanced the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on a bipartisan basis.

The world is a safer place when America leads. Our legislation ensures we are capable of addressing ongoing and emerging conflicts while preparing for future threats. It also controls costs by making wise choices and fully complying with the House budget's spending limits.

NDAA treats active duty military and veterans with the respect they deserve by increasing pay 1.8% (vs. President Obama's proposed 1% increase) and rejecting an Administration proposal to increase TRICARE fees. The Department of Defense, like any large bureaucracy, can and should find ways to save money. However, the place to find savings is certainly not in the paychecks and benefits of the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend us.

Today marked the 238th birthday of the United States Army, an appropriate day for passing legislation ensuring the supremacy of our armed forces. As long as we maintain a bipartisan commitment to strong national defense, America will continue to be the leader of the free world.
