Portman Presses Administration for More Decisive Action in Syria

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) today issued the following statement on the need for more decisive action to address the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Syria:

"The President said that the Assad regime's use of chemical weapons would cross a red line, but until yesterday, no one in the Administration had so much as acknowledged that this line had been crossed. I am hopeful that his announcement of military support for the rebels will be more than just words and will translate into concrete action on the ground. We can no longer afford to stay on the sidelines. Recent regime advances, an expanding humanitarian crisis, and the increased involvement by outside actors have worsened an already dire situation. For too long, this Administration has failed to fully support the Syrian opposition and seemed content to rely on negotiations with the Russians, who are the regime's most important ally and lead supplier of advanced weapons. As a result, our strategy has failed to impose any real consequences on the Syrian regime for either its violation of the "red line" or its atrocities against the Syrian people."
