U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement today:
"I am not encouraged by Senator Rubio's recent comment that "a lot of Republicans want to be supportive of something, but need to be able to go back home and tell people that they have taken serious steps to make sure this never happens again.'
This is the whole problem: it's not about just passing "something' and telling the American people we've fixed the problem. It's about actually fixing the problem.
Yet the Gang of Eight has been inaccurately telling us for months that this is the toughest enforcement plan in history. Now they are telling us they have an amendment to make the untrue thing they said before true. If they want to repair their credibility they need to do more than "tell' people things, they need to actually accomplish those things. For too long they have focused on spin and promotion--not substance."
