Rep. Paul Cook Votes Against Base Closure Amendment

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) issued the following statement on his vote against an amendment regarding Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) during today's National Defense Authorization Act hearing in House Armed Services Committee:

"This BRAC amendment would've opened the door to another round of possible closures over the next two years. I voted against this amendment because we've seen that BRAC kills jobs and costs us more than it saves.

"The 2005 round of BRAC didn't achieve the savings the American people were promised. Federal reports show that costs were projected to be $21 billion and instead, it cost us $35 billion.

"There are five military installations in my district. BRAC cuts jobs and actually costs taxpayers money. I was pleased to join Chairman McKeon in opposing this amendment, which failed. I'll continue to oppose measures that could lead to future base closures in the 8th District."
