Shea-Porter on Reports of Verizon Providing Call Data to the NSA

Statement

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter issued the following statement regarding reports that the National Security Agency is collecting the telephone records of millions of Verizon customers:

"America has a long tradition and expectation of personal privacy, and reports of blanket orders to collect data on law abiding Americans are disturbing.

"The threat that terrorism poses to our country is real, and we must take every reasonable step we can to hunt down terrorists. The American people deserve to know the exact scale, scope, and timeframe of this data collection.

"News like this reminds me that the line between personal privacy and public security can be thin, and we must constantly strive to strike the proper balance."
