Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Equal Pay Act

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement on the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act:

"President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law 50 years ago, establishing the principle of equal pay for equal work for women in the workforce. That was an important milestone for women; however, we still have work to do. Today, women in Hawaii, on average, still make 82 cents for every dollar earned by men, resulting in an annual wage gap of $8,252. Nationally, the gap is even wider. That means less money for food, rent, childcare, and other everyday necessities for their families. I am a proud cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, and I will continue to do all that I can to eliminate income disparities, and ensure the next generation of women has the same opportunities as their male counterparts."
