Statement on Senator Chambliss' Comments on Sexual Assault in the Military

Statement

Date: June 4, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa (HI-01) released the following statement today following remarks by Senator Saxby Chambliss to top military officials testifying at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on sexual assault in the military:

"While I understand the Senator is committed to addressing the issue, his comments today are worrisome. The suggestion that hormone levels are at fault for an alarming number of sex assaults in the military is wrong, and the assumption that our young men and women tasked with protecting our country are incapable of self control is insulting. Anyone who commits sexual assault is a criminal, period. The military is an important presence in Hawaii, and as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I work closely with these men and women. The vast majority of them are brave, selfless individuals who hold themselves to the highest moral and professional standards.

"We know we have more work to do to create a safe environment for all our service members, however, comments like these are hurtful, counterproductive and an affront to men and women."
