Statement by Congressman Dan Kildee on Gas Prices in Michigan

Statement

Date: June 4, 2013
Issues: Oil and Gas

Congressman Dan Kildee issued the following statement today after gasoline prices over the weekend in Michigan rose to the highest in the continental U.S.:

"I am outraged by the recent spike in gas prices that have now pushed gas in Michigan well-over four dollars a gallon. With domestic oil-drilling at an all-time high, outdated oil refineries operated by the nation's largest oil companies -- ExxonMobil, BP, ConocoPhillips and Citgo -- shouldn't be able to hold the Midwest hostage with a sudden surge in gas prices.

"It's completely unacceptable that Big Oil companies continue to receive billions of dollars in unnecessary taxpayer-funded subsidies, all while collecting record-breaking profits. That's why I voted for a budget bill in March that would have ended such corporate giveaways. Michiganders are increasingly stressed by the cost of filling up their tank, and they shouldn't have to pinch pennies at the pump while oil companies are padding their pockets. Hardworking families -- not oil companies -- struggle when the price of gas prices rises, and that is wrong."
