Norton Statement on Appointment of Susan Rice as National Security Adviser

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today released the following statement on the appointment of Susan Rice as President Obama's national security adviser. Norton has followed Rice's life and progress from the time she was a child, born in the District of Columbia, and throughout her career.

"In appointing Ambassador Susan Rice as his national security adviser, the President has wisely chosen to make even more expansive use of Susan Rice's brilliant mind and broad foreign affairs experience. Her proven record as an unusually skillful diplomat with a strong record of accomplishments is highlighted by her unflinching efforts to stand up for U.S. partners and American principles. As U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice showed incredibly versatile talent in foreign affairs -- she delivered the stiffest UN sanctions ever against Iran and North Korea along with many other unprecedented national security accomplishments. At the same time, she has been an unflagging and successful defender of human rights, including her efforts in helping to create UN Women, an agency dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. No one can doubt that Susan Rice has the strength of character and the understanding of today's global problems to advise the President of the United States on the most pressing challenges facing our country and the world."
