Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04) along with fellow Congressional Sponsor Congressman Mike McIntyre (NC-07) hosted the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer service at the United States Capitol today. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May and celebrated by thousands of people in Washington, DC and around the country. This year's observance was themed "Pray For America," "In His name the nations will put their hope," Matthew 12:21.

"The strong faith of our founding fathers guided them as they led our country in its beginning and it is important that our faith in God continues to lead us even today," said Aderholt. "This nation is great because our founding fathers committed to prayer and the principles of their faith and it's important for America to remember our heritage. The teachings of Jesus are as timeless today as they were over 2000 years ago and 200 years ago. Days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in the United States and I am honored to be a part of that tradition again this year."

Speakers at this year's service included Pastor Greg Laurie, Dr. and Mrs. James C. Dobson, Chaplain Barry Black, Representative Frank Wolf, Mrs. Vonette Bright, Rear Admiral William D. Lee and Chaplain Colonel Thomas Waynick.

The National Day of Prayer was officially created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.

Aderholt currently serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies for the powerful House Appropriations Committee, is a member of the Committee's Commerce, Justice and Science; and Homeland Security Subcommittees, and also serves on the Helsinki Commission.
