The Iraqi Government Must Adhere to Its Commitments and Ensure Safety and Security for the Residents of Camp Hurriya, Says Ros-Lehtinen

Statement

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement on the deteriorating situation in Camp Hurriya, formerly known as Camp Liberty, and the discharge of H.Res. 89 authored by Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX). Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"The residents of Camp Hurriya face horrific challenges, as they are trying to survive in an increasingly hostile environment. Deadly attacks have already caused the deaths of several lives, left scores injured, and residents continue to live in unbearable conditions as the situation rapidly deteriorates. These residents, who were brought to Camp Hurriya from Camp Ashraf, were guaranteed safety and protection by the U.N. and the Iraqi government. However, neither have lived up to their agreements under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of 2011.

"This is why, as Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, I have discharged Judge Poe's bill, H.Res. 89, favorably to the full committee. This resolution calls for the relocation of Hurriya residents back to Camp Ashraf where they will have more protection from future attacks and can prepare for eventual resettlement, and urges the Iraqi government to uphold its agreement under the MoU and uphold the humanitarian protections of the residents. I hope my colleagues on the Foreign Affairs Committee will help bring this important bill to the floor for a vote. With thousands of lives still in danger, expediency is paramount."
