Gwen Moore Supports Students, Votes Against H.R. 1911

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) voted against a bill that would make college more expensive for students.

"Today House Republicans passed a bill that would increase the student loan financial burden for students and their parents. With an amount reaching over $1.1 trillion dollars, student debt in our nation has reached a crisis level. The Republican bill would exacerbate this problem, adding additional debt to our students. If this bill became law, students would pay nearly $4 billion more on student loan interest over the next ten years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

"In reality, the GOP bill is a worse option for students than if no legislation was passed at all. If Congress fails to act, the interest rate for federal Stafford subsidized loans will double from 3.4 to 6.8 percent starting July 1.

"However, failing to act is not an option. As Members of Congress, we must do all we can to reduce the financial burden of receiving a higher education both now and in the future."
