Rokita: Education Reform Must Come From States, Not Federal Government

Statement

Date: May 7, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, and member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, took part in a full committee hearing titled "Exploring State and Local Efforts to Improve Accountability," as part of the "Raising the Bar" hearing series. Rokita also chaired the final hour of the hearing in Chairman Kline's absence. After the hearing, Rokita issued the following statement:

"Today's hearing left me with optimism about the future of our education system. Families, teachers, and local leaders -- those that know our children the best -- are working together to find reforms that give our students the best possible chance for success. The insight offered by our witnesses today underscored that reform must come from the states and not the Washington bureaucracy at the Department of Education.

"I look forward to using their input to help guide the committee's path as we work on reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in the coming months," said Rokita.
