Reed Says Ways and Means Committee Will Investigate IRS for Unjustly Targeting Conservative Groups

Statement

Date: May 10, 2013

Following admission by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that the agency targeted applicants for tax-exempt status based on political leanings, Rep. Tom Reed today said the Committee on Ways and Means will hold a hearing to investigate the unfair practice.

"It is unwarranted and disconcerting that the IRS would act with such blatant disregard for proper enforcement of our tax laws," said Rep. Reed. "Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp has vowed a thorough investigation into the actions of the IRS and we stand ready to hold the agency accountable for its partisan actions."

News broke Friday that the IRS admitted to targeting conservative organizations in its consideration for tax-exempt status -- politicizing the process. Following the public admittance, the agency apologized for giving conservative political groups' documents extra scrutiny.

"We're more than concerned about this news and will take a serious look at the extent of the agency's inappropriate actions. The role of the IRS should not be a political one."
