Runyan Responds to VA Initiative to Reduce the Veterans' Claims Backlog

Location: Washington, DC

On Friday, April, 19th, the VA announced a new initiative to expedite compensation claims for disabled vets who have waited one year or longer. Congressman Jon Runyan, Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, made the following statement after the announcement:

"The veterans' claims backlog is arguably the most significant challenge facing the Veterans Administration today, and the size and scope of the backlog will only increase as those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan are eligible for their benefits. I am pleased that Secretary Shinseki has taken this important step to help clear the pathway for veterans to get their claims addressed in an expedited manner. I look forward to working with the VA to learn the details of their plan, and ensuring that this initiative does not delay other claims processing. While administering such an undertaking appropriately will have its own challenges, I am hopeful that these steps mean veterans finally gain better access to the full benefits they have earned through their service in a more timely way."
