Lummis to Congressional Leaders: "No Obamacare Exemption for Members of Congress or Staff"

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo) said today that she is dismayed to learn of media reports that US House and Senate leadership are negotiating an exemption of Members of Congress and their staff from Obamacare's requirement that they purchase healthcare through the exchanges created by the law.

"Congress should exempt everyone or no one from Obamacare's financial consequences," Rep. Lummis said. "The concern that Obamacare's financial burden will force an exodus of quality congressional staff for higher-paying jobs should give us cause to revisit and repeal the law for all Americans, not scramble to shield Congress from it. If anything, Congress should act to impose the mandate on the leadership, committee and White House staff who will continue to enjoy current federal employee health benefits.

"We must remember why Obamacare was imposed on Members of Congress in the first place--so the American people knew that the Members who wrote the law were agreeing to also abide by its mandates. For Congress to renege on this promise in light of what we have found out about the 2,000 page bill since its passage is the epitome of a bait-and-switch."
